Iran slams US for branding Venezuela ‘security threat’

TEHRAN, Apr. 20 (MNA) – In his joint press conference with Venezuelan FM, Mohammad Javad Zarif  strongly condemned Obama for declaring Venezuela a national security threat.

Iranian FM Mohammad Javad Zarif, while expressing his pleasure for hosting Venezuelan ministers of foreign affairs and petroleum, asserted that Iran and Venezuela benefit from deep and vast relations based on common interests and perspectives.

“We had positive talks on different regional and international issues as well as discussions on economic and political arenas,” Zarif added, noting the non-permanent membership of Venezuela in UN Security Council.

Zarif stressed that Iran and Venezuela follow common policies on countering the Western utilization of force and coercive policies like sanctions.”

Zarif meanwhile denounced United States’ recent decision against Venezuela that branded the country a 'national security threat', adding “similar to Iran, the resistance of Venezuelan nation against foreign threats will finally render these measures ineffective.”

Noting the visit of Venezuelan Minister of Petroleum to Tehran, Iranian FM said Tehran and Caracas have also discussed issues related to oil and oil-related international decision making. He emphasized the necessity of being in accordance on the issues between Iran, Venezuela, and other members of OPEC to “preserve the stability of oil market.”

Zarif expressed hope Tehran-Caracas bilateral cooperation would be in the direction of both countries' national interests, regional stability, and international peace.

Delcy Rodriguez, for her part, described the meeting with Iranian FM as positive and constructive and extended her gratitude for Iran’s support.

On bilateral ties, she said, “we have discussed the framework for cooperation in different fields of politics, economic, energy, trade, and politics as well as the issue of oil and OPEC.”

“Our policy in Security Council is the policy of a peaceful revolution within the framework of respecting international law and implementation of UN Charter,” underlined Rudriguez.

“Respecting the rights of other nations and their right of governing are among our concerned principles in the Security Council,” she added.

Venezuelan FM asserted that her country is against any biased one-sided decision making and deemed Iran’s friendship with Venezuela strategic.
